I could sit and watch Clea and Joanna transform spaces on a daily basis! If you haven’t caught an episode of The Home Edit on Netflix I highly recommend it! I purchased their book a few years back and I always go back to reference it. A lot of my organization steps I use are all in this book. This is my favorite book!
So now that you decided to tackle your bathroom, now what? Let’s walk through the basic steps.
Step 1: Measure, record, and shop
Grab a tape measure, piece of paper and a pencil. Measure the height, width, and depth of every drawer and cabinet. I drew a little diagram along with this-nothing fancy. I wanted to have a reference of for placement of the exact spots I had to work with while I was shopping. For example, I knew I wanted the very top drawer by the sink to be our “everyday drawer.” This drawer is narrower than the drawers beneath it.

Make sure you bring your measurement list with you. I always plan on overbuying and using the surplus somewhere else or just return it. I think it’s better to have multiple options. Here are some of my favorite items I purchased:
Step 2: Keep and Toss
I recommend grabbing a trash bag and a large empty bin/basket. If you have little ones in your house like me, I found multiple items that did not belong in the bathroom. I would put those items like Paw Patrol puppies, legos, sunglasses, etc all in the “extra bin” to be moved back to their original places later. Basically anything non bathroom related goes in this bin!
I started with my drawers near the sink and worked my way around the room. Check all dates on products. Throw away anything that is expired or that you don’t use. As I cleaned, I started forming some rough zones. I used the hallway adjacent to my bathroom to give me more space. If your bathroom was like mine, I had lots of mixed up zones.
A zone is an specific area. For example, some of my zones for the bathroom are skin care, hair tools, hair products, pharmacy, everyday items, and back stock/refills. Your zones can be even more specific like lotions, moisturizers, serums etc. I went with more broad zones like his and her bathroom essentials for all our skin care products.

Step 3: Zoning the big mess
Now you should feel very accomplished. You just cleaned out an entire bathroom! That takes so much patience and persistence! But don’t give up yet. I know I felt very overwhelmed looking at all the bathroom items scattered on the floor.
Before I started really zoning all my items, I made a list of all my zones. My list looked like this:
- back stock/refill
- medicine/pharmacy
- makeup
- hair tools
- hair products
- hair accessories
- hair brushes
- skin care Allie
- skin care Thomas
- everyday items
- jewelry
Now time to organize and zone your items. I started with the easiest zone first: back stock! I knew I wanted most of my back stock items at the top of the my cabinet and I found a great extra long acrylic bin from Walmart. I used other smaller bins inside to help organize and sort my items.
I finished organizing and zoning all my items working in one zone at a time! You have to play a game of Tetris with the different sized bins. I used sticky notes on my bins as I started zoning things. This really helped me see where everything will fit!
Step 4: Labels (optional)
Labels are not necessary but speaking from experience…. I organized this same bathroom without labels two years ago. That all went down hill as you can see from the pictures and my two boys who LOVE to rearrange things as I get ready.
These are the labels I got off Amazon.
Before and After Pictures
For the part everyone is most excited about….
Before
How did we function like this? Where are the tweezers?

After
Everything has a place! I feel like we have so much more space in our bathroom now that everything is organized!

We moved some things around because of my curious little boys. There is so much flexibility after you’ve tossed all the extra junk. I hope you feel inspired to tackle your bathroom! Until next time, happy organizing!
