Its officially week 5 and if its anything like week 4 we are in for some major progress!

Fireplace Mantle

The fireplace mantle really came alive during week 4! I previously made the base for the fireplace mantle and then I assembled the surround.
Step 1: I used wood glue and 18 gauge nails to attach the to side pieces mitered at the top at 45 degrees and the bottom at 90 degrees. The middle piece was mitered at 45 degrees on both sides. I used clamps to hold everything together while it dried.
Step 2: Next, I cut the angled inside pieces of the fireplace mantle. For each inner side piece, I beveled both sides of the length at 45 degrees and I did a compound miter on end at 45 degrees. The other end was cut at 90 degrees. The middle piece I cut both ends at 90 degrees.
Step 3: I added wood filler to any areas that needed it and sanded that down.
I plan on adding 1.25” trim on the front to frame the mantle out. This will help conceal the two pieces I joined together to give the illusion of a “thicker” board.
Once the tile comes in, I’ll be tiling and installing the mantle. I’m still undecided on the color of the mantle but will decide as soon as I finish tiling.

Decor Updates

I selected these bamboo blinds from SelectBlinds and placed an order for one roll of grasscloth in the color above. I purchased these two pillows from Antiques on 19th in Houston.

I snagged these two small ginger jars and two vintage cigar boxes for some shelf decor during my trip to Houston. Ginger jars came from The Blue Bird Circle shop and cigar boxes were another Antiques on 19th find.

I found one rose medallion plate I couldn’t pass up and I ordered a jute rug 12×16 from rugs.com at 50% off! Major score!
Paint
My mom and I have been painting over the past two days. It was a huge help to have some assistance with painting a large space. I selected the color Grays Harbor from Sherwin Williams. The color is beautiful! I still have the baseboards, crown molding, and doors to paint, but here is a sneak peek at what it looks like so far. Don’t mind the mess!

Week 5 Goals:
- Finish painting
- Float wall for grasscloth
- Purchase new hardware for doors
- Install wood floor in small section
- Purchase stock cabinet and start building bookshelves (install and prep/paint) OR start tiling if that comes in this week! Follow up week 6 with other project.
- float wall for grasscloth
- Purchase light fixtures for ceiling and sconces
- Schedule cleaning for couch and rug
- Select a coffee table
- Finalize room layout (Ideas: 2 chairs and table to left of fireplace, tables matching on both sides, does peloton stay or go?)
- Stay POSITIVE!
One of my favorite things to do over the weekend is to check out all the other participants on their latest updates for the ORC here! I usually have a cup of coffee to accompany me as I ooh and aah over all the amazing work!
