A year ago I embarked on my first ever One Room Challenge. I felt nervous and excited about this new experience. I’ts been wild ride and I starting my third ORC this fall.
The room I selected to transform over the next 8 weeks will be our family living room. This room currently acts a playroom for my two boys Haines (4) and Keats (2). This room is the reason we bought our home and is the central hang out when company comes over. is the big hang out room when company comes to our home. It was a hidden gem in the back of the house that was added on by a previous owner. I attempted to update this room right when we first moved in, but got quickly sidetracked with two children under two. But now it’s time to make a change and make this room extra special. The Man in the Red Suit comes to see us through the fireplace in this room, so let’s have some fun!
Here are the Before pictures of the space:

I wasted no time and started demo-ing right away! My sweet husband, Thomas, helped with the built-in because it was a beast! The tile on the hearth was a pretty tough task, too.

Project Plans for Fall ORC:
- Build a new fireplace mantle
- Tile fireplace hearth and surround
- Add wood flooring to section missing from previous built in
- Build custom bookshelves with bottom cabinets
- Paint the room
- Install grasscloth to bookshelves and maybe one more potential area (time permitting)
- Add decorative accents and art (pillows, vases, ginger jars)
- Mount a new tv above the fireplace
- Update lighting
- Roman or bamboo shades in windows
- New coffee table and some new furniture
Mini Mood Board

I haven’t selected all my items yet, but these will be highlighted. Fabrics and grasscloth are from Schumacher. Pollen Cut Velvet in Ochre, Chiang Mai in Aquamarine, and Nakara Fine Grasscloth in Natural are the items shown above. I selected Sherwin Williams Grays Harbor 6236 for the wall color.
