I am thrilled that I got a lot of demo completed during ORC Week 1. This week I researched and researched on fireplace mantle builds and fire codes. It’s important to look up your state as some states may differ on fireplace codes.

Fireplace Prep
- I removed all the drywall that was damaged around the fireplace opening. I used my level to make straight lines as a guide when I cut out the damaged drywall. My multitool was perfect for this job. Be sure to wear a mask and have a trash bag near by. I also would highly recommend having a shop vac handy.
- I replaced the old drywall around the fireplace that was damaged with James Hardie Hardiebacker boards that new 1/2″ thick. I used 1/2” thick boards because my surrounding drywall was 1/2″ thick too. This will give me a level surface when I tile.
- I measured and cut the boards down to size using my jigsaw and metal blade. This was dusty step so be sure to be outside and wear your glasses and mask.
- I installed each board using Backer-on screws specifically made for these boards. The bit was included with this set of screws.
- I need to secure the left side with screws and add more tape.
I selected a tile for the fireplace! It is a beautiful linen-textured porcelain tile. Here’s a peek with it next to our wood flooring, paint color, and grasscloth.
Fireplace mantle
I measured multiple times before I made any cuts to my wood. I measured and cut the two sides of the fireplace base pieces and mitered on side on each at 45 degrees. Then I cut my top base piece and mitered both sides at 45 degrees. I used 90 degree corner guides to make sure everything was square.
I made pocket holes in each of the pieces. I secured the pieces with wood glue and screws. I clamped the materials and let it dry overnight.
Week 2 Goals:
- Order tile from local store in Beaumont
- Continue working on the mantle construction
- Donate/sell any unwanted furniture as of now from the living room
- Find out if a second chair is available to match my green and white chair. If not, make a plan B for that chair.
- Order 2 Chiang Mai Dragon Pillow from Schumacher
- Research lighting for ceiling and sconces near built ins
- Measure windows and price out roman shades vs bamboo shades.
