How are we at the halfway point? Week 3 of the ORC consisted of exploring Boston and Maine for my best friend’s wedding! We had the best time! It’s safe to say I ate my body weight in lobster and clam chowder this week.
Fireplace
I ordered two boxes of tile for the fireplace and purchased some matching trim. I have the tile installers on standby for when it arrives after my trip. I really want to tackle this portion of the project myself but this is my first time laying tile. I plan to do more research on the process before I make my final decision. I will install the tile prior to installing the mantle. The fireplace mantle will sit on top of the floor at an angle and I’d rather have straight, clean cuts of tile on the floor.
I will poll everyone on their opinion on the fireplace mantle color after the tile is installed. It will either be matching the existing tile with a custom color match or match the color of the walls (SW Grays Harbor). I’m leaning towards matching the color of the tile.
My plan is to knock out a good portion of the fireplace mantle during Week 4.
Furniture
Last week I reached out to a friend at our local furniture store to track down a second matching chair to one that we purchased a little over two-three years ago. Unfortunately, the item has been discontinued. I love this chair so I think we will add it to storage or try to find a new place for it. I need two matching patterned chairs for the room. I may look at some resale shops and Facebook marketplace to see if I can get anything to redo like I did in the Spring ORC 22. An estate sale might be a great idea too!
I also have two barrel chairs I snatched up for $50 total that need to be redone. I’m still thinking about how good these chairs would look made over for this room. Lots of decisions to make.

I swapped the orientation of the existing rug. Once I have the furniture set up I’ll decide if I need to layer a jute rug under it or not. I also really like the look of a coordinating rug in the reading nook area where the builtins will be installed. Keats approved!

We are replacing our old coffee table. Here is one that I really like for the space. I have always been drawn to burl wood table.

I’m scouting a new ceiling light fixture and two sconces for the built in reading nook area. I have two lamps I scored at an estate sale this summer that have beautiful new shades from Shades of Light.

The end tables will stay but I may end up repainting them. We will see! The round side table may stay but I’ll add a pretty table skirt!
Pillows
I will be getting two square and one lumbar pillow in the Chiang Mai Dragon print. My friend Hannah is going to make my three pillows using the Schumacher Chiang Mai Dragon print and I’ll select a gorgeous solid linen back. I polled Instagram and the majority voted on a solid orange back. Hannah made my pillows for the Spring 2023 ORC. My plan is to mix some high end with some more affordable options for pillows because I need so many.
Goals for Week 4:
- Furniture plan and layout
- Colors and patterns for furniture and pillows
- Purchase any tile materials, borrow tile saw, and pick up tile (have tile guru on back burner)
- Purchase paint for Sherwin Williams and start painting the walls.
- Finish fireplace mantle construction
- Measure and order bamboo shades
- Order fabric for Hannah for pillows
- Resale shop any must haves for the room
- Draw out bookshelves plan
