During the last week of the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge, I realized I never thought about artwork! Thankfully, I am really glad this happened when it did. Seeing the entire space completely wallpapered gave me a better idea of what I wanted in our room.
I saw this little spot above our dresser that was just screaming “hang something here”!
I knew I wanted something simple and elegant. I had been eyeing this Intaglio art prints for a few years now. Artwork can be pricey, but it doesn’t have to be. I fully support purchasing quality art, but I felt I could complete a dupe on this for a fraction of the price. I wanted four of these like the ones below.
Four of these would be $1300 with shipping in the size I wanted for the wall. I couldn’t swallow that. So I was ready to make a dupe! What made this project even better was my sister Hayley was on board to help over the Christmas break! She has a good eye for style and I knew it would be more fun with her!
Supplies
Picture frame (any color and size will work, but I recommend having a smaller mat opening to really frame the Intaglio medallion. Hobby Lobby will cut custom mats. I went this route because I already bought the picture frames and liked the size on the wall. My four frames cost me $95. The two styles below would not require new mats.
On my first attempt at a framed Intaglio medallion I was experimenting with sizes and colors. My original opening was 8×10, which was too big. The Intaglio was floating and getting a bit lost. I got four new mats cut with 4×6 openings for $56. I think a 4×4 opening would’ve looked pretty with this 14×18 mat.
We liked the inner gold framing around the Intaglio medallion so we decided we needed a way to recreate this. I bought washi tape to line the inner opening of the mat. We also bought a fine tip gold sharpie. We tried out both ways and ultimately the sharpie looked better and was much quicker. I did use a wallpaper smoother as a straight edge when I colored in the beveled edge. This step is completely optional, but we both thought it added a little something extra.
I ordered the Intaglio medallions from Sidebardesigns on Etsy. I ordered four with an additional gold edge finish for total of $74.69 with shipping and tax.

Steps
Between multiple laughing and snorting attacks by my sister and I, we managed to pull off a killer lux dupe. Some supplies I already had on hand, but the overall price for all four Intaglio art framed pieces was $244! This was less than the price of one online. A total savings of $1,056!

I thought this was such a clever project!!! I love the look, but geez that price tag… this was a home run for me because the finished intaglio art dupe pieces are flawless and fabulous! Can’t wait to try this at my house!!

What type of frame did you use?
I went to hobby lobby and got these when they were 40% off! I used the gold wood matte frames with a 4×6 opening. I hope that helps.
