I feel like I blinked and it’s the start of week 2. If you’ve been following along with me on social media, you probably already know my original “to-do list” changed very quickly as my little ones got sick. One of the best things about this whole adventure is the flexibility in it.

A quick recap on week one:
I was able to clean and empty the entire closet. I removed the previous hanging system and removed the baseboards inside the closet. I took some measurements of the closet and researched the IKEA PAX system along with a few other options. I also priced out building my own built-ins.

I decided to not expand the closet horizontally due to the substantial amount of electrical wiring. . All the green tape shown on the wall is full of electrical wiring that would have to be moved. Overall, I would gain about a foot which doesn’t seem worth it in the end. Especially after I received a starting estimate of $500, not including materials.
Let’s work smarter, not harder. I’m leaning towards floor to ceiling armoire style closets along the existing wall. That’s smarter, right?

Switching gears to bedroom furniture
I decided the dresser and nightstands had accrued way too much dust and dog hair at this point. They deserved to have a revamp! I found the bedroom furniture at BAW Resale and Interiors here in Beaumont.. I got all three pieces for $250! Painting furniture has quite a few steps so I knew I could work this into my schedule much easier with two toddlers at home.
After a very tough decision on what paint color to select, I picked Sherwin Williams Dark Night. Triton Black was the official winner on instagram by a few votes. I hope to use Triton Black in another spot in the house! I have my eye on a white bed so I liked the idea of different color on the other furniture. I am in love with the finished product!
Here is a brief run-down on the faux bamboo furniture revamp. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing a painting coverall, even though you might look a little creepy.
Steps
- Clean furniture with a soap and water mixture and a slightly damp rag. Allow it to dry.
- Sand furniture using 120 grit sand paper. (I used an orbital sander and 3M grit sanding sponges for drawers)
- Wipe and vacuum off debris
- Remove all drawer pulls and screws.
- Fix any drawers that might be loose. (I used Gorilla glue for wood and clamps)
- Set up painting area. (I used a Wagner tent)
- Prime all pieces.
- Spray a first coat. Let dry for 4 hours and then sand using 120 grit. Wipe away any dust with microfiber towel.
- Spray second coat. Meanwhile, clean hardware. (I boiled them in vinegar and water; then scrubbed them with lemon juice and baking soda)
- Install drawer pulls
- Enjoy this beautiful revamp!
