I honestly can’t believe we have 4 short weeks left of the One Room Challenge. I hope you’ve enjoyed the process so far and are looking forward to seeing the room come together. I can promise you this, I will have a complete room on Wednesday November 18th, so get ready for a lot of work! My boys had fall break this year; which is totally new to us Beaumont people. I enjoyed spending extra time with them!
I really thought I’d be further along on the closet build at this point. I’ve ran into a few hiccups but thankfully I realized it before things got permanent. I am constantly learning as I go. So, Thomas was testing out our new closet opening while pretending he was grabbing his boots and jacket, and let’s just say he was whacked in the face like the trees in Hollister but with hangers. I’ll have to keep the double entry to the closet now versus making it smaller like I originally planned.
I had some fun with old cheesy songs that correlated to projects this week on Instagram so I carried some of that over to this post.
Shoe Nooks
I measured out each of the nooks (dead spaces) in the closet for our shoe organizers. I made a list of materials and a cut list. Unfortunately, the wait time at Home Depot to cut was really long because they were short staffed and it was busy, so I brought the pieces home to cut myself. I highly recommend going to the hardware store during the week. Normally the wait is not long at all, and you can have them cut your big pieces down.
I purchased the following items for our shoe organizers:
- 3/4″ 4ft x 8ft Plywood(one)-using for the sides of shoe organizer
- 1/2″ 4ft x 8ft Plywood(two)-using for the shelves of the shoe organizer
- 1/4″ 4ft x 8ft Plywood(one)-using for the backing of the shoe organizer
- Kreg 1″ screws
- 2” brad nailers
- liquid nails
- wood screws
- primer
Supplies
- Circular Saw
- Drill
- stud finder
- speed square
- Table Saw (completely optional)
- clamps
- brad nailer
- level and/or straight edge for measuring
- Kreg Pocket Jig system
- orbital sander (hand sander will work) with 120 grit paper
- measuring tape
Help… I need somebody
I decided to prime all my boards prior to cutting. That way I could get straight to work on assembling. The edges will be covered with trim after the shoe nook is complete. My boys had a great time lending a hand!
The first cut is the deepest….
My good friend and fellow DIYer guru, Haylee came by to help me rip most of my boards. I am so grateful she lives just five minutes down the road and is always willing to help me out on a project or two! We used my patio table as a work table.
On the 3/4” thick board we cut two pieces at 13” each and two pieces at 11″ each. These pieces will the be sides of the shoe organizer shelf. On the 1/4” board we cut one at 21.5″ and the other at 20.5″. These pieces will act a simple backing that I will have secured against both of the walls in the nooks. On the 1/2″ board I cut the two base toppers (base shelf) and the two top shelves. I also cut down the width of the shelves for the shoe organizers. I need to grab one more 1/2″ board at Home Depot to allocate for all the shelves I want. The height for my shoe organizer sides and backing is 91.5″.
All about that bass
I built a simple 2×4 base for each shoe nook. I used some leftover 2x4s from my garden fence project. I ended up adding pocket holes on my width pieces because I didn’t have the longer brad nails at the time. If you go the pocket hole route, add them to the outside pieces of the widths not the inside. Using a nail gun and wood glue would’ve been a lot faster. I did finish off my bases with a few 2″ brad nails just to make sure we were solid!
I attached both bases in their nooks using wood screws. I used my stud finder to locate the studs along the wall so I knew where to put my screws. Then I attached my base toppers using my 2″ brad nails and nail gun.
I’ve got a pocket full of sunshine
I added pocket holes to the bottom part of my 3/4″ side shoe organizers. I decided this would be the easiest way to install it to the base in the closet.
I am assembling the shoe organizers in my bedroom from this point on. It will be too hard to navigate down on narrow hallways. I used wood glue and brad nails to assemble the sides and top of the shoe organizer. Along with some wide clamps to help hold everything together. Both Tom and I’s shoe nooks will vary due to our shoe heights. I measured out his cowboy boots, dress shoes, and sneakers so I have an idea of shelf heights. I measured my tall boots, heels and sneakers; the sandals were easy! Not all of our shoes will likely fit on this wall but it will get them off the floor collecting dust!
Other tidbits:
The wallpaper came in and it is stunning! I can’t wait to cover up my boring beige walls, no offense but the house was pretty much beige from floor to ceiling. I need a change!
I also finished assembling the second Target dresser. These will be inside a wardrobe.
I didn’t have time to start on the cane bed hack but it’s on the list still. I need to keep the closet momentum going and I believe the bed hack will be a 1-2 day quick project!
Week 4 Plan
- Finish building shoe organizers-> cut and add shelves and secure to bases
- Paint and caulk the shoe organizers
- Sand, prime, and paint the closet
- Repair any damages
- Measure, purchase and install hanging clothes racks (upper and lower)
- Add trim and baseboard to the closet and organizers
- Pick bedding and a rug
- Start looking for pillows and linens
- Draw a new closet entry plan
- Start assembling Ikea pax
