ORC Week 7

Things are starting to come together! I can hardly wait to see the finished room. ORC wouldn’t be complete without a sick kid in tow. Poor Haines had his turn with the flu. He is still recovering as I start week 7. Clearly sick little ones changed up my work schedule but I just stayed positive and enjoyed the extra snuggles. And a BIG ASTROS World Series win!!!!

Room Decor Updates

I ordered a white quilt and 3 euros shams from The Company Store to add to our bed. I was having a difficult time finding a light blue quilt to match the bed that wasn’t too heavy. I think the white will be much easier to bleach if needed too!

I ordered this authentic Vern Yip Antelope Fawn Bolster Pillow Cover from this Etsy shop. The girls were wonderful to chat with and shipped super quickly! I’ve been obsessing over this antelope print lately.

I ordered this pair of matching rattan wall scones from Overstock. I’ve seen a few pictures of wall scones mounted slightly above the headboard versus above the nightstands. I hope this ends up being a pretty look because I really like the look of wall scones. I’ll add a white cord cover on each of these because I don’t like the idea of a black cord with my pretty white and blue wallpaper. One of my windows will be right above my nightstand. So fingers crossed.

I ordered some pillow inserts, decorative items, ceiling light for closet and a rug pad. Some of these items I’ll save for the big reveal next week.

Closet Update

Additional shelf

I finished painting the inside of the closet and added a shelf to the top hanging rod. I trimmed it out and it will be perfect for additional storage. I’ve been contemplating creating a capsule wardrobe but more on that later.

I used an extra 3/4″ board from my shoe nooks that I had leftover to make the shelf. I primed it and painted it white to match the closet. I added the same trim to the front of the shelf that I used on the shoe organizers. I used screws to secure this in place.

3rd IKEA pax

I assembled the 3rd IKEA pax with drawers while watching the Astros win the World Series. The drawers were very simple to put together. The frame was similar to the others but adding the thin backing was the trickiest part. Two people would’ve made that process a lot easier.

If you are looking into purchasing any of the IKEA pax wardrobes be sure to use the Ikea pax planner on their website. Design it exactly how you’d like it with all the doors and interiors etc. Add everything to your Shopping Bag and then look under Assembly Overview. You will find all the locations to install your interior items so that it won’t interfere with door hinges! What a life saver.

I had to prime and paint all 6 of my IKEA doors white. When I was looking online and in the store, they didn’t have any white doors available. This added another step to my process that I wish I could’ve avoided.

How to paint IKEA pax doors

1. I used my orbital sander with 80 grit sandpaper on both sides and edges of the doors.
2. Wipe the dust off with a towel
3. Prime the doors. I used Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3.
4. Ideally spraying these doors would be perfect, but it was so humid in Beaumont that I had to use a roller on them instead. Make sure you use a high density foam roller on the doors. Paint them once. I got a custom color match from Sherwin Williams.
5. Sand with 120 Grit
6. Paint a second coat. Touch up any areas if necessary

Installing the doors was pretty straight forward and would’ve been slightly easier with someone else. I used a 2×4 and a book to help prop the door up while I secured the hinges. The trickiest part was adjusting all six doors accordingly to make them the same height. I had a slight gap where the crown molding and IKEA pax met so I ripped some 2x4s and installed them at the top with my brad nailer and liquid nails. I’ll add caulk and molding this week.

It was a really difficult decision when choosing between the two different door pulls. I originally thought I’d only want acrylic brass ones and never look back, but I stumbled upon these vintage solid brass ones on Amazon. When I saw how perfectly the went with the drawer pulls on the dresser I was torn. I had everyone help me decide which look was better. I decided which ones I’ll use and plan on installing them today or tomorrow.

Baseboards, Crown Molding, Plantation Shutters, & Door

I was looking at the wallpaper against the wall and realized that my trim was all off-white, and my wallpaper background is a crisp white. It made the baseboards and the crown molding yellow and in not a good way. So like any good home improvement project, let’s add something to the list we didn’t plan on attacking.

• I sanded everything with 120 Grit sandpaper.
• Wiped away dust
• Applied painters tape along the baseboards and crown molding
• Primed everything
• Added M1 to my paint.
• Using a 2 1/2″ angled trim brush apply paint to everything.
• Sand with 120 grit sanding sponge
• Wipe clean
• Paint a final coat
• Remove tape and admire your work!
