I had such a wonderful time participating in my very first ORC last fall that I knew I had to sign up the spring Challenge, too! My husband and I decided to redo our living and dining room area. We’ve been slowly finding items for both rooms through estate sales and Facebook Marketplace. But both rooms are catch-all spaces because they aren’t finished. The area is one large room divided by two open bookshelves. The bookshelves are unique and are one of my favorite features in the house.
Before Pictures of the Dining and Living Room
Plan for the next 8 weeks: Dining Room:
- Find a new light fixture/chandelier
- Purchase a rug
- Recover dining room chairs
- Add texture wallpaper or grasscloth to the top portion of the walls
- Update lower paneling with box moulding
- Potentially fix up china cabinet (either restore-a-finish) or add some wallpaper to the inside back
- Add items to display in the china cabinet
- Add artwork to walls
Plan for the next 8 weeks: Living Room:
- Add new pillows
- Purchase a new rug
- Change out the wall color and add box moulding or wallpaper (still deciding)
- Add two accent chairs and potentially one more
- Purchase a credenza or large cabinet for large wall
- Add a frame tv
- Add decorative pieces to the open shelves (360 items in mind)
- Lamps and lighting
- Artwork for wall
- Repaint front door and hideaway door
- Update crown moulding?

Goals for Week One:
- Order material for dining room chairs (Schumacher Performance Velvet in Sky 5 yards for 10 chairs)
- Order pillows for couch (4 starting off-two Lee Jofa Althea citron and two Schumacher sky velvet pillows)
- Clean area
- Move furniture
- Pick up black dresser from friend (an Estate Sale purchase)
- Order grasscloth for dining room
- Order more samples of wallpaper for living room options
- Select some paint options for living room
- Get some samples of moulding for walls
