Week 3 was focused on making final choices and getting a lot of preparation done. My original plans for week 3 were a bit too much, so I had to adjust my plan.
Trim Selection
I chose a green paint from Sherwin Williams called Green Onyx for the edges of the room, such as around the doors and windows. It stands out really well against the wallpaper I picked out. Here’s a little preview of how the wallpaper and painted parts will complement each other. I’m very happy with the combination!
The wallpaper came with extra material on the sides, so I’ll need to cut it off to make it fit right before I hang it up. I’ll show you how I do it when it’s time to start.
Prep Work
I got everything ready for a new coat of paint by cleaning and sanding the woodwork and doors. This was important because I’m not using the same kind of paint as before. After sanding, I cleaned again and then put on primer. I used a primer called Sherwin Williams ProBlock. I love using this product. Before starting on the woodwork and doors, I decided to work on the closet to avoid any mess later. My mom, Paula, was a big help with priming too.
Closet
I paused on painting the trim and started organizing the closet. My two boys are sharing a room, and even though there isn’t much space, we’ve made room for their twin beds. Last week, I bought a dresser with three drawers that can also be used as a nightstand. But I knew that wouldn’t be enough space for both boys’ things. Although the closet is big, it’s not well-suited for their needs. So, I decided to add some drawers or shelves to make it more useful for them and anyone who might own the home in the future.
A while back, I bought two dressers from Target for a project, but didn’t use them. They were already put together, and I realized they’d be perfect for the boys’ closet. Luckily, I had already made them stackable a couple of years ago.
To fit them in the closet, I took off the bottom of the top dresser, marked the baseboards in the closet, and cut a piece out. I used special tools to cut and remove the baseboards and then attached the two dressers together with screws and to the wall.
For decoration, I thought about adding extra details and painting the dressers. But using stick-on faux grasscloth wallpaper seemed quicker and easier. I’ve only done some of the drawers so far, but it looks great. I plan to cover the rest of the drawers and the spaces around them with the same wallpaper. I’m also considering adding brass handles to the drawers.
I prepared the closet for a makeover by covering everything up and applying a base coat of paint. The old shelf color wasn’t to my taste. I want to paint the trim Green Onyx and the walls white. I’ve also picked out a simple, new light which should look better than the old one. For organizing, I’m thinking of getting baskets or boxes to put on the top shelves for storing clothes and toys. I’m also considering adding a shoe storage option on the floor. To finish it off, I might put on some brass handles.
Window Treatment
I have two windows in the room; one looks outside, and the other doesn’t. I wanted to change how the windows looked without the green paint from the shutters showing outside. I got an idea from a photo to try something new with the shutters.
I took an old sheet and used glue to give it nice edges, then put it on rods to create curtains just to see if it would look good. This was just a test and I didn’t want to spend any money on it. Surprisingly, a lot of people liked these curtains and got what I was trying to do with the look. I’m still making small changes, but if it doesn’t turn out well, I could go for bamboo or roman shades.
Goals for Week 4
I’d love to wrap up week 3 with painting the ceiling and closet white! (use new product) Squeeze in some vintage resale shopping in Houston with my mom! Then we can move forward with week 4 goals:
- Paint trim in Green Onyx
- Caulk after painting using NEW PRODUCT
- Trim wallpaper
- Finish wrapping dresser in faux grasscloth
- Order ceiling fan and light
- Make a selection for bedding fabrics-order anything we need
