Here is a quick recap on week 5
Fireplace Mantle
I decided to wood-fill my two pieces on the fireplace prior to adding some trim on the front facing. After sanding, I think the wood filler seamlessly blended the two pieces together, creating an illusion of a thicker piece of wood. Unfortunately, we had a hiccup with the tile for the fireplace. It is backordered until after the ORC wraps. I canceled my order and found a replacement tile as close to the original one I selected online. It is the same exact color so I’m hoping I will like it just as much. It should be arriving by the middle of Week 7. I hope I can knock this in time for the big reveal!
Decor Updates:
The jute rug came in and the it’s fantastic! The size fills the space and the texture is nice and thick. However, my original rug I wanted to layer on top is too small. Luckily, my mom wants a new rug in the study so we are doing a little trade. I ordered a 10×14 in the blue/green/orange rug to layer on top of the 12×16 jute rug. I think these proportions will be much better. You can see below how the rug proportions are just off.
And did you catch the window treatments? The bamboo shades arrived and I’m slowly installing them. I absolutely love them! The warm up the room and allow just the perfect amount of light in it. Here is another picture of the bamboo shades. I got them from Selectblinds, Classic Woven collection in Tansy.
I floated the wall for the grasscloth. I used all purpose joint compound and applied a smooth, even coat with a drywall knife, mud pan, and tapping knives. I sanded everything down with 120 grit sandpaper and cleaned the walls. Next up, I’ll prime the area for the grasscloth after the bookshelves are complete.
MISC
Paint
Almost all the painting is done, except for a few touch ups. My sweet mom came by to help me paint. She was a huge help. She tackled the two closet doors. I removed the door to the family room because we never used it. I’m added some hinge hole replacements and wood filler. After the wood filler dries, I’ll sand it down and paint the frame.
I’m leaning towards brass hardware for the door knobs and cabinet pulls. I really like the combination against the wall color.
Wood Floor
This might be the best part of the week. I installed wood flooring for the first time! It was very fun and not as difficult as I thought. I really enjoyed it. I only had a small section to do, and was using some old flooring from the previous owners. I had one piece left to spare! Man was I lucky! I used Liquid Nails wood floor glue and glued it directly to the concrete. The flooring had tongue and groove which made it very easy to connect and install the pieces. I used my miter saw to make some trims. I used a tapping block and mallet to set each of the panels. I also used painters tape at the seams to hold everything together as I installed. Overall, I’d definitely tackle this project again!
Bookshelves
I purchased two stock cabinets for the bookshelf project and added some 3/8″ plywood to the floor on either side of the wood flooring. This will keep my cabinets level with the flooring when I add the baseboards back.
Week 6 Goals:
- FINISH BUILDING Bookshelves! That’s build, caulk, wood fill, trim, prime and paint before Week 7 starts!
- Order sconces and door fixtures
- Order ceiling light order standing light (library light)
- Call electrician to make outlet by fireplace for tv
- Purchase tv
- Purchase pillow inserts
- Put room back together
- Order coffee table and behind the couch table
- Finish installing shades
- Schedule room and furniture cleaning
- Finish up doorway- sand, prime, and paint
- Paint touchups
- Clean up the room
- Check out all the other participants in the ORC here!!!
