What a week! I got a lot done this week and finished the inside of the closet! I am thrilled! Keats has fully recovered from the flu and we had a successful night of trick-or-treating in between projects! Haines and Keats got way too much candy that I can’t stop snacking on.
Fun Room Updates
I ordered our king duvet cover and king shams from Serena and Lily in Sky. My plan is to incorporate some Euro shams and a coordinating quilt/coverlet for the bed. Something similar to below
I selected this fan and ceiling light for our room. I wish I could be the person that has a gorgeous chandelier hanging in my room, but I’m a fan girl 100%!
The Inner Closet
I measured the bottom bases and tops on the shoe nooks, along with the molding and baseboards. I used a taller baseboard to conceal a hole towards the bottom of the wall-work smarter, not harder. I used my table saw and miter saw to cut my trim to the appropriate sizes. This was my first time using the miter saw at a 45 degree angle to cut the corners of the trim. This was relatively simple. If you don’t have a miter saw, you can use a hand saw for trim and molding like I mentioned last week.
I added wood filler and caulk to all the trim and molding. I even got enough wood filler in between my wall and shoe nook gap where the wall is slightly uneven. Everything looks more polished after wood filler and caulk.
IKEA Pax frames
I wanted to use one IKEA Pax for a closet entrance, but quickly learned we still need a similar width for a doorway opening as before. A smaller doorway wouldn’t allow us both to access our shoes and clothes. So the Tetris game began.
I am a visual person so I decided to assemble both of the 29 1/2″ frames first. I assembled both IKEA pax frames by myself (this was way easier than I anticipated) and things started to make sense. I would use both of the IKEA pax frames for individual closet entrances. I only had 2 of the 3 I needed due to limited stock. I knew I wanted the 39 3/8″ frame but at the time zero drawers were in stock for pickup or shipping. That’s why I purchased the Target modular dressers to put inside the IKEA pax frame.
I was looking on the IKEA site after a successful night of trick-or-treating and saw they had the large 39 3/8″ IKEA pax frame and drawers available for shipping! I was pumped! Now everything will look cohesive!
My garage/workshop is currently a MESS! So I may use the dressers in the garage for storage or sell them on Facebook Marketplace. Still undecided and it’s a problem for another day.
Painting the closet
I used some painters tape to secure my tarps for painting. I picked Behr extra white primer and paint. I did prime the closet prior to painting too. I did two coats of the Behr using my Graco airless spray gun.
More closet additions
I added three white hanging bars at 40″ tall and 80″ tall. I plan to add a shelf to the top rack after I paint it to match the closet for additional storage.
Cutting a closet rod
I knew I wanted to use a heavy duty rod but the standard rods were a tad too long for our opening. I decided to cut them down myself and add some end caps. This was a really easy process and gives you a quick 10 minute arm burner too!
- Measure the length you need for your closet rod and mark the spot with a sharpie.
- Tighten the tube cutter around the tube carefully lining up on the line you marked. (Make sure you purchase the correct diameter and material cutter for your rod.
- Rotate the cutter around and around the pipe carefully tightening a little bit more as you go.
- The excess pipe will separate when you cut all the way through.
- Attach rod end caps and set in place.
IKEA Doors
When I made my first big IKEA pickup order, I bought all of the doors I needed for the wardrobes at that time. However, the only color they had in stock for all three wardrobes I planned on was gray. So let the painting begin again…. but first I sanded the fronts and backs with 120 Grit sandpaper and my orbital sander. I wiped off the dust and gave the insides of the door and edges the first prime coat. I’ll be painting the doors with the same paint from the closet. I may end up painting the Ikea wardrobes as well just so the color matches perfectly.
Week 6 plan
- Find 3 Euro Shams, duvet insert, and decide on extra pillows.
- Finish painting the closet shelf, PAX doors/wardrobes if necessary
- Assemble final PAX with drawers
- Add trim, molding, and baseboards to wardrobes.
- Build an additional book shelf on the end of IKEA Pax OR decide to wallpaper that nook
- Make cane headboard
- Decide if wall scones will work or regular lamps are needed
- Find a simple ceiling light for closet and install
- Purchase all wallpaper prep items
- Start wallpaper prep!
